David Hockney : L’Arrivée du printemps

Martin Bailey, Bice Curiger

This catalogue was published on the occasion of the exhibition L’Arrivée du printemps (The Arrival of Spring) by David Hockney, held from 11 October 2015 to 17 January 2016 at the Fondation Vincent van Gogh Arles.

Born in 1937 in England, David Hockney is one of the leading figures in contemporary art. For many decades the artist has divided his time between the US and Britain, namely between Los Angeles, where he has lived most recently since 2013, and his native Yorkshire, whose wooded countryside inspired the 12 drawings created on iPad (2011) and the 25 charcoal drawings (2013) presented at the Fondation. These two series testify to the constant curiosity, underlying Hockney’s oeuvre, about new inventions and about renewing the language of art. The exhibition is complemented by further works, including Vincent, Chair and Pipe (1988), a painting whose vibrant colours testify to the artist’s admiration for Van Gogh.
